Ultimately, homelessness may be regarded as an outer expression of a profound inner sense of personal displacement. The major task is, therefore, to assist these less fortunate of our Brothers and Sisters to overcome their sense of despair and to re-establish that inner sense of belonging, that sense of personal pride and worthiness. However, before, one may even begin to consider such lofty goals, the basic physical needs of the homeless must first be addressed. It is our contention that giving to the homeless things that are no longer useful to us, though filling an urgent need, may not be the most effective means of helping in the re-establishment of self-worth. Accordingly, this program focuses on giving to the homeless brand new garments, particularly undergarments. In addition, one aspect of this program encourages participants, when eating out for example, to purchase an extra meal earmarked to be given to the first "homeless" person that one encounters on the way home. Such acts, in our experience, tend to communicate, to the ones we are trying to help, that they are valued individuals worthy of receiving gifts of unused clothing and untouched meals. Ultimately, we would like to emulate the good deeds of a few physicians in some metropolitan areas by sponsoring basic medical care and, perhaps in some cases, psychological counseling. This program is directed by members of the Preceptory associated with the Hughes de Payens Commandery as well as by members of the Chartres Preceptory.
